The rare natural phenomenon expected to occur today may disrupt radio broadcasts

A major geomagnetic storm could interfere with radio communications on Earth on Monday, space weather forecasters have warned after spotting an explosion of plasma from the Sun's surface, Euronews reports.

It will also mean for those chasing views of the Northern Lights, the solar flare will make for great aurora viewing.

There is no reason for the public to worry, according to the alert issued Saturday by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

The storm can disrupt high-frequency radio transmissions, such as those from aircraft trying to communicate with distant traffic control towers.

Most commercial aircraft can use satellite transmission as a backup, said Jonathan Lash, a forecaster at the center.

Solar activity is more active

Satellite operators may have trouble tracking their spacecraft, and power grids may also see an "induced current" in their lines, though nothing they can't handle, he said.

Every 11 years, the sun's magnetic field rotates, meaning its north and south poles change position.

Solar activity changes during that cycle and is now near its most active, called solar maximum.

During such periods, geomagnetic storms of the type that arrived Sunday can hit Earth several times a year, Lash said. In December, the largest solar flare in years disrupted radio communications./ CNA
