The number of illegal border crossings in the EU is increasing

The number of illegal border crossings into the European Union (EU) has risen to a record level in the first seven months of this year, with 176,000 attempts to enter the bloc, the EU's border management agency, Frontex, has said. , Friday.

This is the highest figure for this time period since 2016, and represents an increase of 13 percent. In July alone, 42,700 people crossed the border illegally, an increase of 19 percent compared to July 2022, Frontex said.

However, Frontex reported a decline in attempts through the Western Balkans, which is the second most used route by migrants. More than 52,200 migrants tried to enter the EU through this route, which is a decrease of 26 percent, mainly due to tougher visa policies.

According to the data, more than half of those attempts to enter, or 89,047, were made via the central Mediterranean, for example from Libya and Tunisia via Sicily and Malta.

Here, the number has doubled in the first seven months of this year. The arrival of thousands of migrants on Italian shores has created political tensions and led EU leaders to seek a deal with Tunisia to prevent people from starting their journeys to Europe from there.

Migrants are expected to continue using this route in the coming months, according to Frontex, as traffickers offer lower prices for migrants to cross the Mediterranean, due to strong competition between criminal groups.

However, Frontex has underlined that the Mediterranean Sea remains dangerous, as 2,060 migrants disappeared in the first seven months of this year.

All other routes reported a decrease in unauthorized entry attempts, the agency said
