The Indian state of West Bengal has been gripped by protests and intense tensions in recent days following the tragic rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The girl's body was found on Sunday, just a day after her family reported her missing.

The serious incident took place in Surjyapur village, on the outskirts of Kolkata, and has caused massive anger among the population. The protests have degraded into violence, while an angry mob lynched an innocent person to death, confusing him with the perpetrators. Meanwhile, the police have announced that one of the main suspects, Prabhash Mondal, was killed during a clash with the officers.

The crime has sparked a major political row, with the opposition accusing the new Bharatiya Janata Party government of failing to protect women and girls. The BJP, which won elections in May, has denied the accusation, but pressure is mounting as women's safety was a key plank of its election campaign.

The victim's family has severely accused the police of inaction. According to them, when they sought help at the police station on Saturday evening, the officers ignored them and turned them away. It was the family and residents themselves who found the security camera footage showing the girl in the company of Prabhash Mondal, who later surrendered to the police. Forensic reports indicate that the girl may have been still alive when she was thrown into the water.

In a controversial development, the suspect, Prabhash Mondal, was killed by police. According to the official version of events, he tried to snatch a policeman's gun during the reconstruction of the crime scene, which led to their reaction. The action has raised suspicions among human rights activists and opposition politicians, who have described the incident as "suspicious" and in violation of the law.

The suspect's mother, in a rare reaction, said she would not accept her son's body, stating that he deserved punishment for the terrible act he committed.

Currently, the area remains under strict security measures, with a ban on public gatherings and an increase in paramilitary forces to maintain order, while the case is being investigated by a special investigative group.
