Trump leaves NATO summit on positive note, despite tensions over Iran and allies

US President Donald Trump closed the NATO summit with a more conciliatory message than expected, despite the strong statements he made before the start of the meetings against some allies and Iran.

At the start of the summit, Trump openly criticized several alliance member countries, citing Spain's refusal to support US operations against Iran, and reinstated his claims to Greenland.

However, during closed-door discussions, he avoided these topics and focused mainly on the situation with Iran and the need for NATO countries to increase defense investments.

Contrary to the concerns of some European leaders, Trump did not raise the idea of ??the United States withdrawing from NATO. On the contrary, he expressed satisfaction with the allies' commitments to increase military spending, assessing that these steps are the result of pressure that his administration has exerted for years.

After the summit, the US president said the atmosphere between the leaders was positive, noting that he felt supported by his counterparts. He also acknowledged that their behavior may have been part of a diplomatic effort to preserve relations with Washington.

One of the important developments was Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where the American leader implied that the US could support the production of Patriot interceptors in Ukraine, a signal that is seen as a positive step for Kiev.

However, Trump's rhetoric toward Iran remained harsh. He accused Tehran of escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and reiterated that he continues to be the target of threats from the Iranian regime.

The summit was considered an important test for relations between the US and European allies, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte tried to maintain a climate of cooperation, praising Trump's role in encouraging member countries to increase their contribution to mutual defense./ CNA
