Trump announces end of ceasefire/Calls Iranian leaders "scum"

US President Donald Trump has officially declared that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran has ended, significantly escalating tensions after the exchange of military attacks last night.

In a statement to the media from the NATO Summit in Ankara, Trump took an extremely tough stance towards Tehran, stating that he no longer wants to negotiate with a regime that he described as "sick" and "violent."

"As far as I'm concerned, the ceasefire is over. I don't want to deal with them anymore, they're scum. They're sick people run by sick people," Trump said, adding that the diplomatic talks were a "waste of time." He compared the Iranian regime to a "cancer," stressing the need to "get rid of it as soon as possible."

The latest clash followed a wide-ranging operation by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which struck more than 80 Iranian targets, including dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats, in response to attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran announced it had targeted US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who was with Trump in Ankara, supported the US decision, calling it "absolutely necessary" and accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire.

On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of "flagrant violations" of the memorandum of understanding signed just last month. He warned that fundamental parts of the agreement to stop the conflict have become ineffective and threatened that Iran will not hesitate to defend its sovereignty, warning that it will strike any country that allows its bases to be used for attacks on Iran.

This new crisis comes at a delicate moment for the NATO Alliance, as President Trump took the opportunity to repeat criticism of allies, complaining that the US is paying the main financial burden for global security, while others, according to him, are not providing adequate support in the face of the Iranian threat./ CNA
