Volcano erupts in the Philippines / Ash covers surrounding areas

The eruption of the Kanlaon volcano on the island of Negros in the Philippines caused great concern on Thursday morning, as large amounts of volcanic ash covered surrounding areas.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the moderate-intensity eruption occurred at around 7:30 a.m. and lasted for about three minutes.

During the eruption, a thick gray cloud rose to a height of 2 to 3 kilometers above the crater. The volcanic ash spread eastward, covering agricultural lands and vehicles in the towns of Kanlaon and San Carlos.

Rockfalls were also reported in the town of Kanlaon. Ash clouds reached the neighboring island of Cebu, where local authorities suspended classes in some schools as a precautionary measure.

The provincial governor ordered the disaster management office to closely monitor the situation, while all public hospitals were placed on heightened alert. /CNA
