France faces severe heatwave/ Nuclear reactor shuts down, safety measures

France is facing a severe heatwave, which according to the French Meteorological Service is expected to last at least until July 14. Temperatures on Thursday are expected to reach up to 40°C in Nantes and Bordeaux, while in Paris, Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand, Limoges and Toulouse will fluctuate between 35 and 38°C.

Due to high temperatures, French authorities announced the shutdown of a reactor at the nuclear power plant, about 90 kilometers from Toulouse. The decision was made after temperatures in the Garonne River have risen sharply and are expected to reach 28°C on Friday, affecting the safe operation of the plant.

Meanwhile, a French Senate report stresses that the country needs to review its climate strategy and climate diplomacy.

The report proposes the drafting of a five-year national strategy, which will define France's geographical, economic, diplomatic and scientific priorities in the fight against climate change. It also recommends holding parliamentary debates ahead of the annual UN climate conferences (COP).

The Senate also demands that France cooperate more closely with European partners to create alliances that support ambitious climate protection objectives, without waiting for a broad international consensus to be reached.

Due to the high risk of fires and extreme temperatures, local authorities have imposed additional security measures in several regions of the country. The use of fireworks, the sale of alcohol and the organization of some festive activities, on the eve of France's national holiday on July 14 and other public events, have been banned. /CNA
