Known for several world hits, the legendary singer passes away

Legendary singer Bonnie Tyler, known for the worldwide hits "Total Eclipse of the Heart," "Holding Out for a Hero" and "It's a Heartache," has died at the age of 75.

The news was confirmed by her family and team through a statement on the official website, which stated that the artist passed away in a hospital in Portugal, as a result of the illness for which she was being treated.

In May, Tyler underwent emergency intestinal surgery and was placed in a coma. Last month, her spokesperson announced that she had come out of the coma but remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Following the news of her death, Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens described Bonnie Tyler as an icon of Welsh music and winner of Grammy and Brit awards, stressing that her voice accompanied an entire generation.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Bonnie Tyler was discovered by producer Roger Bell in a Swansea nightclub. She released her first single, "Lost in France", in 1977, and achieved international success that same year with "It's a Heartache".

The peak of her career came in 1983 with the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart", which topped the music charts in Britain and the United States, making Bonnie Tyler the first Welsh artist to reach number one in the US.

During her career, Tyler was nominated for Grammy Awards, represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2013, and in 2023 was awarded the MBE for her contribution to music.

She continued to be active on stage in recent years. In 2024, she released an electronic version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" with David Guetta and Hypaton, and this year the original song surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify. Bonnie Tyler leaves behind her husband, Robert Sullivan, to whom she was married for more than 50 years. /CNA
