Israel deports Iranian Jew suspected of attempted espionage

Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency said it thwarted an Iranian espionage attempt on Friday when it arrested and then deported an Iranian Jew who flew into the country with a box of beans it said was intended to hide surveillance equipment. , reports Reuters.

The Shin Bet said the man, who has relatives in Israel, admitted during questioning at Ben Gurion Airport that he arrived in the country to spy on Israeli targets for Iranian security operatives. He said the man, who was found with cellphones, a power bank and cash, was refused entry and deported back to Iran.

"This event is part of a broad Iranian effort to establish espionage and terrorist networks in Israel," the Shin Bet said in a statement.

Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
