Staged video goes viral/ Concern over incitement to religious hatred in India

A viral video on the social network "Youtube" has raised concern in India, as it incites religious hatred and misogyny (hatred against women).

It is about a video, where a boy is seen attacking a person wearing a black burqa, while the latter is holding a child in his arms. The boy then forcibly removes her burqa and discovers that a man is hiding behind it.

The message accompanying the clip warns that people should "be aware" of criminals who use the burqa - a head covering worn by Muslim women around the world - to disguise themselves and "abduct children".

The video was viewed more than 29 million times before it was deleted and was staged by amateur actors, the BBC reports .

Other similar videos have been released on social media, created for entertainment but increasingly widely shared as real events in India.

Many of the staged videos show people wearing burqas abducting children. This could have real-life consequences, as in recent years mobs have also been attacked by people who believed they were kidnappers.

This has led authorities in many Indian states to issue warnings against fake news that incites religious hatred and misogyny.

This video trend is being realized in many Indian languages ??including Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi and Telugu. At times, local media have also mistaken staged videos for news.

Meanwhile, all this comes at a time when India has witnessed growing tension between religious communities, particularly Hindus and Muslims, since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in May 2014./ CNA
