British ministry: Wagner troops expected to train Belarusian forces

A series of explosions were heard in Kiev this morning. The mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko, had earlier called on residents to go to shelters to protect themselves from airstrikes, while an alert for such attacks had been issued across the country.

This Friday, Ukraine shot down a rocket near a children's hospital in Kiev, but there were no reports of injuries.

Meanwhile, in its daily briefing on the Russian attack on Ukraine, the British Ministry of Defense said that "there is a real chance" that a small number of trainers from the Wagner mercenary group will be present during the training of Belarusian troops in the Grodno region, in northwest of Belarus, near the border with Poland and Lithuania.

According to the release, Belarus' defense ministry said the exercise in the Grodno area "aims to incorporate lessons learned by the Russian military in Ukraine," adding that Wagner troops are likely to act as trainers during the exercise.

Ukrainian officials also announced that on Thursday, in the city of Zaporizhia, Ukraine, a Russian missile struck a hotel where United Nations personnel have often stayed, killing one and injuring 16.

The coordinator for humanitarian affairs for Ukraine, Denise Brown, confirmed to the Reuters news agency that United Nations personnel often stayed at the Reikartz hotel when traveling to this city for work.

Among the injured were 4 children.

On Thursday evening, the Ukrainian navy said it had begun using a temporary "humanitarian corridor" and that the first ships were expected to sail through it within days. The announcement comes after last month, Russia pulled out of an agreement that allowed Ukraine to export wheat through Black Sea ports.

Ukrainian officials said that the corridor will be used for its commercial ships that are blocked in Ukrainian ports, for grain and other agricultural products./ VOA
