Maui wildfire death toll rises to 55.

Search teams in Maui will continue to search for other victims of the fire that engulfed the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, writes Reuters.

The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, reduced the picturesque resort town to smoldering piles of rubble as it destroyed 1,000 buildings and left thousands homeless in what was the worst natural disaster in the US state's history.

The fire was 80 percent contained as of Thursday night, officials said.

In addition to searching for the missing, officials were devising a plan to house the newly homeless in hotels and tourist rental properties. 

Thousands of tourists and locals were evacuated from the west side of Maui, which has a population of about 166,000, with some taking shelter on the island or the neighboring island of Oahu.
