8 tons of cocaine are seized in the Dutch port, worth 600 million euros

Dutch authorities have seized about 8,000 kilograms (8 tons) of cocaine in Rotterdam, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Cocaine is valued at 600 million euros (661 million dollars), DW reports .

This was the largest cargo ever recorded at the port. The last largest was a 4,500 kilogram load made in 2020.

Another large seizure was made in 2021, when 3,600 kilograms of drugs were found.

The drug was discovered in July, but the find was only announced on Thursday.

The cocaine was hidden in a container alongside bananas on a ship that had arrived from Ecuador.

More than 8,000 packages of drugs were discovered in the containers.

"On July 13, customs made the largest drug seizure in the port of Rotterdam," prosecutors said. "A total of 8,064 one-kilogram packages of cocaine were extracted from twelve banana pallets.

Dutch customs said such large shipments of cocaine are becoming rarer, with the latest shipments significantly smaller than those reported on Thursday.
