Human Rights Watch: Afghans are experiencing "humanitarian distress"

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on donor countries to find ways to mitigate the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan without reinforcing the Taliban's oppressive policies against women, girls and the media.

In a press release on August 10, HRW highlighted the devastating impact of the Taliban decree, which prohibits women from working in local and international non-governmental organizations. This has added to their difficulties in accessing food, health care, and housekeeping.

The Taliban decree denying education to women and girls has also contributed to deepening the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, HRW said.

"The Taliban's misogynistic policies show a complete disregard for the basic rights of women ," said Fereshta Abbasi from HRW, adding that the group's restrictive measures against women are harming the entire Afghan society, not just women.

Abbasi said that Afghans are now experiencing " a human rights and humanitarian crisis under Taliban rule ".

She called on the militant group's leaders to abandon "abusive policies and rules" and called on the international committee to hold them accountable for the worsening situation in the war-torn country.

Afghanistan lost development aid and financial support from Western donors when the Taliban took over after US and NATO forces left in late August 2021.

After remaining under Taliban rule, Afghanistan has become one of the hardest-hit countries in the world by crisis, with more than 28 million people – or about two-thirds of its population – in urgent need of humanitarian aid, according to HRW. / VOA
