Imran Khan can no longer run for prime minister for 5 years in Pakistan

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan can no longer run for prime minister for five years, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The decision comes after Khan pleaded guilty last week in a corruption trial and was sentenced to three years in prison, the statement said.

Khan was arrested at his home in Lahore after the court's verdict on Saturday and flown to the capital Islamabad.

The former cricket star turned populist politician has repeatedly denied the allegations. His PTI party said it has appealed the decision to the Supreme Court.

In a video recorded before his arrest on Saturday, Khan urged supporters to protest peacefully to ensure their "freedom and human rights".

He stated that he was going through this ordeal for "the future of the children of Pakistan"./ CNA
