Massachusetts declares state of emergency amid influx of migrants seeking asylum

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in the liberal state because of a surge in immigrants that she says has left social services overwhelmed, and she called for more funding and help from the federal government.

The state said there are about 5,600 families, or more than 20,000 people, in the state's shelter system. Healey said there are many contributing factors, including "federal immigration and work authorization policies," as well as a lack of affordable housing and the end of COVID-era programs.

On Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan to house up to 2,000 migrants in the Queens borough.

Some Republican-led states, such as Texas and Florida, have transported migrants by bus or plane to Democratic-led states and cities, such as California, Massachusetts, New York and Chicago.
