Erdogan: Western countries must keep their promise on the grain agreement

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has said late Tuesday that the revival of the agreement with Russia to allow the export of Ukrainian grains depends on the West.

He called on the countries of the West to keep "their promises".

"I think the solution can be found," Erdogan said on August 8, referring to an earlier phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who declined to continue the deal.

Erdogan played a key role in brokering the now-broken agreement on the safe export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, and has positioned himself as a mediator in the conflict.

The agreement, brokered by Ankara and the United Nations in July 2022, expired last month after Moscow refused to renew it.

Last month, during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Erdogan announced that Putin would visit Turkey in August.

But Moscow was upset when Zelensky returned from Istanbul with five senior commanders from Ukraine's Azov regiment, who were supposed to have stayed in Turkey until the end of the conflict under a prisoner exchange deal with Moscow.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the time that it was "a direct violation" of the agreement with Turkey./CNA
