Biden declares the area around the Grand Canyon a national monument

US President Joe Biden signed the proclamation creating a national monument in Arizona on Tuesday, surrounded by a small crowd of indigenous leaders and lawmakers who have forever advocated for land protection.

"It is not hyperbole to suggest that there is no national treasure, none more magnificent than the Grand Canyon," the president said Tuesday, describing the valley as "God's cathedral."

President Biden's decision provides federal protection for an area of ??about 405,000 acres in the state of Arizona, which is known as an electoral battleground. The action aims to cement the president's stance on environmental issues. For several decades, indigenous tribes and environmentalists have demanded the protection of the tourist area.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and Congressman Raul Grijalva, both Democrats, as well as U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an independent, who have lobbied for environmental protection around the area, were also in attendance.

The Antiquities Act of 1906 gives a president the authority to protect territories of historical or scientific value by declaring them national monuments.
