The West fills Putin's coffers with purchases of nuclear fuel

The US and its European allies are importing large quantities of nuclear fuel from Russia, providing Moscow with hundreds of millions of euros in much-needed revenue as it wages war against Ukraine.

The sales, which are legal and unsanctioned, have raised alarm from experts and elected officials who say they are helping finance Moscow and complicating efforts to limit its warfighting capabilities.

Reliance on Russian nuclear products used mainly to fuel civilian reactors leaves the US and its allies vulnerable to energy shortages if Russian President Vladimir Putin cuts off supplies.

The challenge is likely to become more intense as those nations seek to boost emission-free electricity production to combat climate change, euronews writes .

Russia has sold about 1.5 billion euros worth of nuclear products to firms in the US and Europe, according to trade data and experts.

Ukrainian drone attacks in Russia continue

Russia claimed early Thursday that it shot down 13 Ukrainian drones, including 11 near Crimea and two heading toward Moscow, at a time when Russian-controlled territories are increasingly under attack.

No casualties or damage were reported, either near the Russian capital or the annexed peninsula, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram.

Ukrainian drone strikes against Russia have increased sharply in recent weeks as Moscow continues to crack down on Ukraine.

Deadly Russian attack on Zaporizhia

Two people were killed and seven wounded on Wednesday in a Russian attack in Zaporizhia, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said.

The death toll in the large southern Ukrainian city was revised downward after one person was revived.

Zelenskyy announced the earlier death toll, releasing a video showing a damaged church with flames and smoke in its courtyard, as well as another building on fire.

The city, home to Europe's largest nuclear power plant, is tens of kilometers from the southern front and is regularly targeted by Russian bombing.
