Spaho, slaps the DP for the vote in the SA Committee: Party lobster

Former vice-chairman and former MP of the Democratic Party, Edmond Spaho, has reacted sharply to the decision of the DP MPs not to vote on the statement of the Joint Stabilization and Association Committee (SA), which contains recommendations for Albania's integration into the European Union.

Spaho says he expected the declaration, drafted by MEPs and based on previous resolutions of the European Parliament and the Parliament of Albania on European integration, to be adopted by consensus, leaving aside political clashes.

According to him, the Democratic MPs chose not to support the document by making "pretexts", while he calls this an irresponsible action at a key moment for the country's European integration process.

He accuses the DP leaders of putting party interests above national interests, adding that this is not the first time that, according to him, the Democrats have taken positions that harm the European integration process.

Spaho states that the vote of the DP deputies will not stop Albania's path towards the European Union, but emphasizes that the opposition members in the SA Committee will be remembered as "obstructors and saboteurs" of this process.

According to him, the Democratic Party's electoral decline is related to the inability to place the interests of citizens and the country above party interests.

"The declaration of the SA Joint Committee, with recommendations for Albania's integration into the EU, is not voted on by opposition MPs, or more precisely those of the DP.

I thought that the fact that the text of the declaration was prepared by MEPs in the SA Committee and that the recent EP resolution and the resolution of the Albanian Parliament on European integration, voted by the DP and the SP, were attached to it, would be enough to leave behind the scars of Albanian politics and to vote for the declaration unanimously.

But no!

As it has always done, the DP made excuses not to vote on the text of the declaration prepared by the MEPs.

At the most decisive moment for the country's European integration process, my opposition colleagues vote against it. I feel very sad about this action.

If I were part of that committee, regardless of the party leader's order, I would vote in favor, because Albania in Europe is worth more than all the political parties combined.

We love Albania like all of Europe was the call when we rose up in 1990. Today it has become a slogan: we love Albania for ourselves and our own weighty interests.

With this action, my colleagues brutally showed that for them the DP is worth more than the interests of the country, that their "return" to power is more important than European integration.

It is not the first time that the DP has held such anti-national positions. They take inspiration from those who lead them.

I don't know of any country that has aimed or is aiming for EU integration, where opposition politicians, for their narrow interests, would be so irresponsible with the EU integration process.

I am surprised by some DP politicians who pose as pro-European, pro-Atlantic, who talk from morning to night about the country's European integration, and when the hour of judgment comes, they behave like Haxhi Qamili and Esat Pasha. They are even older than their centuries-old president.

One thing is certain, the vote of the DP deputies in this Committee does not at all hinder the country's integration into the EU, just as it has not hindered it in all these years.

But the DP members in the SA Joint Committee will be remembered as party lobsters, who did not allow those who truly are the obstacles and saboteurs of the process of Albania's integration into the European Union to appear in public.

"That's why we in the DP are disappearing more and more from the political map of the country every day, we are being reduced electorally and we have remained the eternal opposition, because we do not want to accept what the true interest of the citizens is and whenever we are given the opportunity to show ourselves, we shamelessly rise up against the interest of the country," Spaho writes./CNA
