"The joint resolution was not approved"/ PS: The opposition carried

The Socialist Party has reacted to the statement of the DP deputies regarding the joint resolution on Albania's integration process.

The SP's reaction states that MEPs voted in favor of the Recommendations in support of Albania's membership in the EU, while opposition MPs voted against Albania's membership in the EU.

It is further added that the Socialist Party deputies voted for part of the Democratic Party's amendments, with the exception of the wording that, according to them, did not reflect the spirit of a joint parliamentary document.

Full reaction:

Today in Strasbourg, at the meeting of the Albania-European Union Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee, Socialist Party deputies and all MEPs voted in favor of the Recommendations in support of Albania's membership in the EU. DP deputies carried out Saliu's order, as they had announced, by voting against Albania in the EU.

The Socialist Party did not submit any amendments to the text proposed by the Secretariat of the CPSA, precisely because two fundamental documents were attached to that text: the European Parliament Resolution on Albania and the Resolution adopted by consensus by the Albanian Parliament on the process of membership in the European Union.

Under these conditions, repeating the content of these two resolutions, while simultaneously removing the parts that clearly evidence Albania's positive progress on this journey, had neither political meaning, nor institutional logic, nor added value to the joint text.

It is also important to note that a number of amendments proposed by the Democratic Party were also supported and voted for by representatives of the Socialist Party, precisely in the consensual spirit that should characterize a process as important as Albania's membership in the European Union.

On the other hand, the Socialist Party deputies voted for part of the Democratic Party amendments, excluding the formulations that did not reflect the spirit of a joint parliamentary document. The attempt to distort the balance of the document, through the complete exclusion of any reference that reflects the recognized and certified progress from the European Commission report on Albania and the notification of the closure of the negotiation chapters, could not be accepted.

The membership process is not served by denying the country's achievements, but by building on them, with seriousness, responsibility, and a willingness to cooperate.

The Socialist Party remains committed to supporting every text, every position and every cooperation mechanism that truly serves Albania's advancement towards the European Union, based on facts, standards and concrete results of this process. /CNA
