At least 36 dead in Maui as wildfires rip through land/Thousands run to escape

Thousands of Hawaiians fled their homes on Maui as flames swept across the island, destroying parts of a century-old town and killing at least 36 people in one of the deadliest US wildfires in recent years.

Crews battled flames in several parts of the island on Wednesday, and the flames forced some adults and children to flee.

Officials said earlier that 271 structures were damaged or destroyed and dozens of people were injured. The 2018 Campfire in California killed at least 85 people and nearly leveled the town of Paradise.

Officials warned that the death toll in Hawaii could rise, with the fires still burning.

As the fires raged, about 11,000 visitors left Maui on Wednesday, with at least 1,500 more expected to leave on Thursday, according to Ed Sniffen, state transportation director. Officials prepared the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu to receive thousands of evacuees./ CNA
