The measures taken by Kosovo are not enough for the EU

The EU reacts by describing the steps taken by the government for the north of Kosovo as development in the right direction, but according to it, additional steps are needed. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kurti demands the removal of measures against Kosovo.

The European Union demands from the government of Kosovo additional actions in the direction of the extension of the situation in the north of Kosovo. But the EU is ready to impose punitive measures against Serbia as well, if it does not take actions requested by the union. The EU spokesman, Peter Stano, said on Thursday in Brussels that the punitive measures imposed on Kosovo are reversible measures and this depends on how Pristina and Belgrade approach the escalation of the situation and the return to the normal process of dialogue.

"What we have done recently in the light of the tensions that happened in the north, is to put some measures against the government of Kosovo due to the inability to act in a European way towards expansion and taking important steps in this direction. If the member countries of the European Union demand something like this, we will also take the necessary measures against Serbia, always, if the member countries of the bloc assess that in the current conditions and context of the recent crisis, Serbia is not doing anything to reduce tensions". said spokesman Stano.

Prime Minister Kurti's reaction

On July 10, after an agreement reached in Bratislava between the chief negotiator of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi and the European envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, the Kosovo police reduced by 50% its presence in the facilities of the municipalities in the north of Kosovo. Therefore, Prime Minister Albin Kurti called on the European Union to remove the measures, as he called them, "unjust and punitive towards Kosovo", while he repeated that "the government is open to holding new elections in the north of the country". "We are doing everything we can and know, but it would be necessary for our European partners and allies to improve their attitude towards Kosovo as soon as possible, since a democratic and progressive Republic like Kosovo deserves to be helped with everything they can and not to have punitive measures against her",

Preventive diplomacy is required

Five days ago, however, European and American diplomats, respectively ten chairmen of the foreign relations commissions and 56 deputies, in a letter sent to the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel and the American Secretary of State Antony Blinken, asked for preventive diplomacy, balance and non-repetition of past mistakes. In the letter, they emphasized the lack of pressure on Serbia, after the tensions in the north of Kosovo.

The early elections in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by Serb majority, have been constantly requested by the international community as one of the main conditions for the extension of the situation in the north. As long as they are not developed, the European Union continues to maintain punitive measures against Kosovo, which include: the temporary suspension of the work of the bodies created on the basis of the Stabilization and Association Agreement, the non-invitation of Kosovo to high-level meetings and the suspension of bilateral visits./ DW
