At least 23 dead after Rohingya boat sinks

At least 23 people from the Rohingya minority have died as a result of the sinking of the ship, as they were fleeing Myanmar - also known as Burma.

Another 30 people are missing, while eight are believed to have escaped the incident.

Survivors said they tried to get to Malaysia, but their boat with more than 50 people on board was abandoned by the transport team.

Every year, thousands of Rohingya Muslims try to cross the sea to Malaysia or Indonesia.

They flee persecution in Myanmar and overcrowded refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh.

Rohingya Muslims are an ethnic minority in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

Most of them fled to Bangladesh in 2017 to escape the genocidal campaign launched by the Myanmar military.

Those who remained in Myanmar have also tried to flee the military coup of 2021./REL
