Criticized President Putin during an interview/ Journalist fined in Russia

On August 10, a court in St. Petersburg fined one of Russia's best-known television journalists, Alexander Nevzorov, for what it said were "extremist" positions he took in an interview with the Belarusian Service of Radio Europe. e Lira, and on his YouTube channel, related to Russia's war in Ukraine.

Nevzorov was fined 200 euros for saying "bad things about the president" and "bad things about the army", since he fled Russia in March 2022.

In February 2023, a Moscow court sentenced Nevzorov in absentia to eight years in prison on charges of discrediting Russia's armed forces.

On social networks, he has accused the Russian army of deliberately bombing the maternity hospital in Mariupol and of torturing and killing civilians in Buca.

In June last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the decree granting Ukrainian citizenship to Nevzorov and his wife Lydia.

Until the 2012 elections, Nevzorov was a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, but now opposes Russia's war in Ukraine and is critical of the Russian authorities.

Since Russia launched its war in Ukraine, which Russian officials call a "special military operation," Russian law enforcement authorities have cracked down on dissidents.

Just days after the conflict began, Putin signed a law that provides for severe penalties for spreading "fake news" about Russia's war so the Kremlin can control the war narrative.

Spreading "fake news" about the Russian army is considered an offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison./REL
