A special prosecutor is appointed in the investigation against Hunter Biden

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he is appointing a special prosecutor in the case against Mr. Hunter Biden, deepening the investigation into President Biden's son ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Mr. Garland said Friday that he will appoint State Attorney David Weiss, of Dellauer, who is currently investigating the president's son's financial and business activities, as special prosecutor in the case.

Mr. Garland stated on Tuesday that Mr. Weiss had told him that "in his judgment, the investigation had reached a stage where his further functions could only proceed with the status of Special Prosecutor and he asked me to appoint him him in such a position."

"After reviewing his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances related to this case, I have come to the conclusion that it is in the public interest to appoint him as a special prosecutor," declared Mr. Garland .

This move is an important step by Mr. Garland, who is known to be cautious, and comes at a time when the Department of Justice is undertaking a series of investigations into former President Donald Trump, once the main rival of President Biden in next year's elections.

The appointment of the special prosecutor was also made alongside the investigation that Republican lawmakers are preparing for Hunter Biden's businesses./ VOA
