The sharp rise in jet fuel prices, driven by tensions in the Middle East and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, is hitting the global aviation industry and is expected to directly impact the summer travel season.
According to Reuters reports, the price of jet fuel has increased significantly in recent weeks, from $85–90 per barrel to as much as $150–200. This increase is a severe blow to airlines, as fuel accounts for about 25% of their operating costs.
Aviation expert Anita Mendiratta points out that the industry is facing a dual situation: rising prices and serious supply problems.
According to her, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz affect not only oil transportation, but also the refining chain. Crude oil passing through this area must be refined to be turned into jet fuel, and this process has been damaged by the conflict.
Europe is expected to be among the hardest-hit regions, due to its high dependence on supplies coming from the Middle East.
Airline Lufthansa has announced that it will reduce around 20,000 short-haul flights by October, while tour operator TUI has lowered its profit forecasts due to market uncertainties.
Meanwhile, companies such as easyJet and Wizz Air have warned of a negative impact on their operations.
Experts warn that travelers will feel this situation through: increased ticket prices, flight reductions, more limited offers.
With demand increasing during the summer season and supply remaining unstable, pressure on the market is expected to increase.
Even if tensions ease, a return to normality will not be immediate. Rebuilding supply chains and restoring traveler confidence will take time.
According to experts, experience from the COVID-19 pandemic shows that travel demand can recover quickly, but full market stabilization remains a longer process.
Under these conditions, the current crisis is seen as a significant test for the global aviation industry, at one of the most important periods of the year for travel./ CNA
