Will there be a normalization of Greece-Turkey relations?

Greece and Turkey have engaged in an all-out effort to normalize relations between them. The road will not be easy at all and every step will carry the risk of unexpected developments, even the complete collapse of the negotiations.

However, so far the climate is relatively good. It is hoped that the dangerous chapter that began with the expulsion of migrants from Turkey to the Greek Evros region and the Turkish oil exploration vessel and Turkish warships accompanying them in the Aegean in the summer of 2020, which led the two neighboring countries  to the threshold of an armed conflict, and which continued with the threats of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other Turkish officials "that they will suddenly land one night in Athens", and culminated in a complete freeze of bilateral relations and the infamous statement "Mitsotakis yok ” (for me, this man no longer exists), after the Greek Prime Minister's visit to Washington, has been closed.
Or at least for now.

It is clear that under the pressure of some realities and difficulties  facing Turkey, Erdogan is looking for new balances with the countries of the region - with Israel, Syria and Egypt - and to some extent the change of attitude towards Greece is part of a framework Similar.

The Turkish president is a realistic leader. And in the case of Greek-Turkish relations, the "reality" it faces has many aspects. First is the fact that Greece is a full member of the European Union, so it has a role and voice in improving the bloc's relations with Ankara and the benefits this would bring to the Turkish economy.

The second aspect is the influence of Hellenism in Washington, which is also reflected in the difficulties Turkey faces in terms of strengthening its defense capacities. It is becoming increasingly clear that threats against Greece and flights over the Greek islands have a cost.

Thirdly, and which to some extent complements the second, is the continuous deepening of relations between Athens and Washington, which has evolved into a strategic cooperation, which serves the important geopolitical interests of the USA, as was also confirmed in the case of the war in Ukraine.

Në mjedisin e krijuar nga realitetet e mësipërme, negociatat thelbësore mes Greqisë dhe Turqisë do të nisin pas rreth 1muaji e gjysmë, në nivel zëvendësministrash të jashtëm.

Në rast se Ankaraja do të arrijë të kuptojë se revizionizmi, në të gjitha shfaqjet e tij, krijon më shumë probleme sesa përfitime, mund të ketë përparime në bisedime, të cilat mund t’i hapin një rrugë normalizimit të marrëdhënieve dypalëshe nëpërmjet disa lëvizjeve të guximshme.Nga Tom Ellis “Ekthimerini”/ Përshtatur nga CNA
