Earthquakes off the coast of Japan/First tsunami waves reach the east coast

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck the waters near Iwate Prefecture in Japan, triggering a tsunami warning for large parts of the northeastern coast.

It struck at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), in waters about 100 km off the coast of Sanriku.

The earthquake registered an intensity of 5+ on the Japanese seismic scale of 0 to 7, according to NHK.

Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has urged people in areas affected by the earthquake to seek higher ground.

Local media are now reporting that the first tsunami waves are reaching Iwate prefecture, with a wave as high as 40cm recorded at Miyako port./CNA, translated by BBC
