In January 1989, as a college student, I came here to march alongside Solidarnost (Solidarity), the movement that helped peacefully overthrow Soviet communism. Now more than three decades later, I brought my children to Gdansk to learn about communism and to meet the man who successfully fought it: Leh Walesa.
Of the giants who brought down the iron curtain - among them Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul XX II, Vaslav Havel - only Valesa is still alive. At 79, he still looks as energetic as the young electrician who once led a workers' uprising against the "dictatorship of the proletariat".
He also forced Poland's Marxist regime to recognize the first independent trade unions in the communist world; was imprisoned under martial law, and later forced his former captors to sit with him at the negotiating table to allow free elections.
And as the first president of the new free Poland, he anchored the country that was part of the Warsaw Pact to the institutions of the West. I met him in his office at the European Solidarity Center, the museum built on the grounds of the old Lenin site where Solidarnost was born, and asked him about polls showing that half of American youth have a positive view of socialism.
What is his message to young people who do not have a first-hand experience of communism? "In fact, many young people lie, accepting communism as an interesting idea. It contains beautiful sentences that speak of equality, of justice. … But as soon as you start to put that system into practice, all kinds of serious disasters happen. Unfortunately, young people often do not know this. We Poles have experience with socialism, so we really know something about it. Therefore, I strongly recommend them to reject it" - he says.

But, he continued, we need to understand why young people are turning their backs on the past. "They are doing this because today there are no clear answers, ideas for the future. So today the world is being led by populist demagogues because it is easier for them. But those who potentially have better solutions than demagogues and populists should wake up from their sleep" - he emphasizes.
What do you think today as you see Russian troops attack Ukraine, the man who once as president, forced Russian troops to leave Polish territory? "I know very well what could have happened if Poland had not managed to join NATO on time. Russia would definitely attack Poland and not Ukraine. I am doing my best to help Ukraine, because in a way, they are fighting in our country" - emphasizes Valesa.
Ish-disidenti i famshëm shton se e admiron shumë presidentin ukrainas Volodimir Zelenski.

" That's why I care so much that your generation succeeds, because only your success will somehow guarantee my success, the success of Solidarnost... If you succeed, then people will praise me. But if you can't make it, I can be insulted! So in a way, my legacy depends on your success.”/ Adapted from CNA
