What we are going through is another hellish summer. A double whammy of the man-made climate crisis and the re-emergence of the El Niño phenomenon, which has significantly increased temperatures making this year very deadly. July 2023 has officially been declared the hottest month ever recorded in the world.

In a recent speech, UN Secretary-General António Guterres ominously described this year as the beginning of an "age of global boiling." In Europe alone, over 60,000 people died last summer from heat-related illnesses.

Some countries used a heat wave naming pattern similar to those used for hurricanes and typhoons. For example, the Italian Meteorological Association named an extreme heat wave in July "Cerberus", after the 3-headed dog that guarded the gates of hell in Dante's "Inferno".

And the problems are especially greater in densely populated cities, where the "urban heat island effect" can produce microclimates that are around 10 degrees Celsius hotter than surrounding areas.

This phenomenon, first documented in the 1800s by an amateur meteorologist in London, occurs in areas with high concentrations of heat-absorbing concrete buildings, large areas of asphalt, and a lack of green spaces.

Despite having known the dangers of global warming for decades, many cities are unfortunately unprepared.

But now local officials are appointing "chief warming officials" to speed up "action plans against global warming" as new companies race among themselves to invent better air conditioners and personal cooling devices. Here are the 5 measures that cities are taking now to cope with the ever-increasing temperatures:

1. Planting trees and creating as many green spaces as possible

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, standing under a tree makes the temperature feel 11 to 25 degrees Celsius cooler compared to standing in direct sunlight.

In addition to immediate relief, a process called "evapotranspiration," where water is transferred from plants and soil into the atmosphere, helps cool surrounding areas by up to 5 degrees Celsius.

Barcelona, ??a city currently turned into a laboratory for progressive urban interventions, could very quickly provide a vital case study in the efficacy of trees. By 2037, the Spanish city aims to cover 30 percent of its surface with a variety of climate-resistant species.
