Shocking study / Taking vitamin C and E can promote the growth of tumors

Popular over-the-counter supplements may promote the growth of some cancerous tumors, experts warn.

Taking vitamin C and E pills can cause lung cancer to grow and spread.

The Swedish scientists stressed that people with any form of cancer should avoid changing their diet at the end of the new study.

But they said that taking the supplements on top of a healthy diet rich in vitamins C and E could encourage the spread of the disease.

The study, published in  The Journal of Clinical Investigation  , shows that scientists gave mice with cancer additional vitamins, which they already received in their diet, writes The Sun.

The researchers found that the higher the level of the vitamins in the mouse's system, the more new blood vessels formed inside the tumors – something that could ultimately promote the growth and spread of the disease.

Vitamin C is mainly found in fruits and vegetables such as lemons, peppers, strawberries, broccoli and potatoes.

According to the NHS, adults aged 19 to 64 need 40mg of vitamin C a day.

You should be able to get all the vitamin C you need from your daily diet.

Lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy.

Vitamin E is found in a wide variety of foods, such as vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, and whole grains.

It helps maintain healthy skin and eyes and boosts the body's immune system.

Women require 3 mg per day, while men require 4 mg.
