The tree that could not become a forest

I will never forget January 9, 2004. I was the news director at Top Channel and, thanks to this television, the tragedy that cost Fatos Nano a lot of his career was discovered and reported. It was a time when we sat at tables together and half a phone call could have been enough, but absolutely not.

In another episode, I was writing the article titled "Nano is gone," when I got a call from a member of his staff, who, along with several civil society representatives from the US, invited us to dinner.

“I can’t come,” I told him, “because tomorrow I’m going to publish this article with this title. I can’t.”

After a while, I received an SMS: "Don't take the letter off, and come for dinner."

There are two episodes that speak volumes. This was Fatos Nano. The Socialist Party also had his face in those years. There were those who tried to interpret this excessive tolerance as indifference, but no matter how hard they tried to mix these two elements — with malice or not — they could not diminish the minimum: the face of citizenship.

Tolerance and citizenship are trees that do not grow easily in this land, especially after several years of imprisonment...

May it be easy, my friend Fatos Nano. Whoever understood you, understood you. Whoever did not understand you, still has time to reflect every time he sees himself in the mirror of the time we are living in — increasingly reducing the so-called "defects", which look like microscopic grains of sand on the great trunk of the Tree of Citizenship, which in this country could never become a forest.
