Trump gets 4 phone calls rejected in one week

US President Donald Trump made at least four attempts to speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone in recent weeks, but the Indian leader refused to speak to him, according to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine.

President Trump's efforts to speak with Prime Minister Modi also came at a time when his administration hit India with 50% tariffs, the highest on any country except Brazil.

Indo-US ties, cultivated over 25 years, have deteriorated sharply after Trump attacked India over its trade surplus. Washington also imposed sanctions on New Delhi for buying Russian crude oil from India.

“FAZ claims that Trump tried to call Modi four times in recent weeks, but Modi rejected the calls,” Thorsten Benner, co-founder and director of the Berlin-based Global Public Policy Institute, wrote on X, sharing a copy of the newspaper’s article.

"I don't care what India does with Russia. They can destroy their dead economies together," Trump remarked on July 31.

On August 10, Modi covertly criticized Trump's comment about a dead economy, claiming that India was progressing towards becoming one of the world's top three economies. FAZ noticed signs that Modi was offended.

He also noted that Trump's approach typically allowed him to take advantage of other countries' dependence on the US market. But Modi "resisted this" in Trump's first term, maintaining a cooperative relationship with Trump without compromising India's economic interests.

But FAZ noted that the surprising element of this situation was Trump's repeated attempts to convince Modi to surrender.

"The fact that the Indian still refuses to speak shows the depth of his anger, but also his caution," the German newspaper's report said./ CNA
