Accident kills 2 people and injures 44 others/ German authorities accuse Afghan

Authorities in Germany today charged a man with murder for killing two people and injuring 44 others in a car crash in Munich in February this year, which prosecutors say was motivated by a desire to avenge the suffering of Muslims.

The man, an Afghan national identified only as Farhad N. in accordance with German privacy rules, was arrested shortly after the attack during a trade union demonstration. He came to Germany as an asylum seeker and was 24 years old at the time of the attack.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement that on the morning of February 13, the suspect deliberately drove his car into the union event in central Munich.

This was the fifth in a series of attacks involving immigrants over a nine-month period that put migration at the forefront of last year's campaign for Germany's snap elections on February 23./ CNA
