Strengthening defense and cooperation/ Zelensky meets German Vice Chancellor

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil to a meeting in Kiev today.

"In close coordination with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, I am seeking to exchange ideas on how Germany can best support Ukraine in a possible peace process," the Social Democratic politician said.

Zelensky, on the other hand, through a post on the 'X' platform, expressed satisfaction with the meeting and emphasized the focus of the discussion on air defense issues, drone production, and cooperation between the two countries.

"I am pleased to welcome German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance @larsklingbeil on his first visit to Kyiv.

We discussed strengthening our air defense, financing domestic drone production in Ukraine, and the opportunities offered by the PURL program for the procurement of American weapons for our country. Work is ongoing on the purchase of two additional Patriot systems, as well as the delivery of additional IRIS-T air defense systems manufactured in Germany.

Particular attention was paid to diplomatic efforts for peace, strengthening sanctions against Russia and security guarantees. Relevant diplomatic work is underway, especially at the level of national security advisers. We count on Germany to be among the leaders in the development and implementation of security guarantees.

"I am grateful to Germany and the German people for their support for Ukraine and for providing the largest combined assistance among European countries since the beginning of this war. This is important support for our people and we deeply appreciate it," Zelensky wrote. /CNA
