German minister in Kiev: Ukraine can count on Germany's support

Russian President Vladimir Putin must be clear that Germany's support for Ukraine is not fading, German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil said on Monday after arriving in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, for an unannounced visit.

"Putin should have no illusions that Germany's support for Ukraine can be stopped," said Klingbeil, chairman of the Social Democratic Party, which is a junior partner in the governing coalition led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"On the contrary, we remain the second largest supporter of Ukraine in the world and the largest in Europe," Klingbeil stressed.

"Ukraine can continue to count on Germany's support," he added.

Klingbeil called on Putin to prove he is interested in peace in the deadliest war in Europe in 80 years, which broke out in February 2022.

United States President Donald Trump has pushed for a quick end to the war, but Kiev and its allies worry that he may try to impose a deal on Russia's terms.

Klingbeil said that Ukraine must be included in the talks and that a ceasefire and credible security guarantees are necessary to have a lasting peace.

"To this end, we are cooperating closely at the international level," he said.

Among the options presented this week for Ukraine's security following a possible peace deal, both French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed support for sending troops as part of a coalition of the willing.

Merz has also indicated that Germany is open to participating in this coalition, but would face opposition both from within and outside his political spectrum on the issue.

According to Klingbeil's Ministry, the German government has supported Ukraine with 50.5 billion euros since the start of the war./ REL
