Budgetary controls on public deficit/ French Prime Minister seeks confidence

French Prime Minister François Bayrou will seek a high-stakes confidence vote in parliament on September 8 over unpopular plans to clean up France's public finances.

Bayrou's move will assess whether he has enough support in a fragmented parliament for his 44 billion euro ($51.5 billion) budget austerity as he tries to ease a budget deficit that reached 5.8 percent of gross domestic product last year, almost double the EU's official limit of 3 percent.

If he loses the vote of confidence, Bayrou's minority government will fall.

Bayrou does not have a majority in the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, and the upcoming vote underscores the fragility of his position.

In mid-July, Bayrou presented proposals for the 2026 budget, saying he wanted to reduce the number of public holidays in France as part of an effort to tackle what he called the country's debt "curse."

After years of excessive spending, France has been told to control its public deficit and reduce its widespread debt, as required under EU rules. /CNA
