Trump lowers expectations for Putin-Zelensky meeting

US President Trump said he had spoken to Russian President Putin again on the phone. Zelensky announced a new round of talks with the US.

US President Donald Trump was more reserved about a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "I don't know if they'll meet. Maybe they'll meet. Maybe they won't," Trump said in Washington in response to reporters' questions. Trump told reporters that after the meeting on Ukraine at the White House he had spoken to Putin on the phone and that every conversation he had with Putin had been "a good conversation." During the conversation with reporters, he nevertheless expressed his anger at Russia's attacks on Ukrainian cities and called for a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

Last week, his spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt, after repeated questions from reporters, said that Putin had agreed to a direct meeting with Zelensky in the coming weeks. After the Trump-Putin meeting, there was much talk that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky could take place soon, but the Kremlin has since played down those expectations. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently said that Moscow and Kiev must first agree on peace and then a meeting between the presidents could seal the deal.

Zelensky announces new round of talks with the US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would hold talks with U.S. representatives later this week about possible negotiations with Russia to end the war. He met in Kyiv with U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg, with whom he reportedly discussed possible sanctions against Russia.

In an online statement, Zelensky said he and Kellogg had discussed ways to "force Moscow to enter into real negotiations and end the war." Zelensky said he and the US special envoy Kellogg had also discussed security guarantees in the event of a peace deal with Russia. Zelensky expects the most important aspects of such security guarantees to be negotiated "soon." Ukrainian and US negotiating teams are scheduled to meet later this week./ DW
