Merz does not want to recognize an independent Palestinian state

Although more than 140 countries have already recognized Palestine as an independent state, and Canada, France, Great Britain, Denmark and Australia are expected to join them, Germany does not support this.

According to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, unlike other countries such as Canada or France, the German government currently has no plans to recognize an independent Palestinian state. Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this clear again after a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. "We will not support this initiative," Merz said at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Carney. "We currently do not consider the conditions for recognizing the state to be fulfilled in any way," Merz said.

Canada, France, the United Kingdom and Australia have said they will recognize an independent Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. "If this is on the agenda of the UN General Assembly, we will not pursue this step," Merz said.

Germany supports two-state solution

There is neither "a nation in the true sense," nor a recognized Palestinian national territory, nor "a state authority that offers a government that is recognized by everyone," the chancellor later clarified his position in a joint meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Berlin.

"However, the Israeli government should not make it impossible for such a state to be established one day," Merz added. The expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, for example, "is clearly aimed at making the formation of the state impossible in the future," Merz said, adding that the German government's goal remains a two-state solution.

Spain, Ireland and Denmark

More than 140 countries around the world have already recognized Palestine as an independent state, including several EU member states such as Spain and Ireland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has not ruled out recognizing a Palestinian state. "We are in favor," Frederiksen told reporters on Tuesday (26.08.). However, it must be ensured that it will be "a democratic state."/ DW
