Trump's 50% tariff on India takes effect, Modi appeals to businesses

Donald Trump's steep 50% tariffs on India have come into effect, weeks after the US president issued an executive order hitting the Asian country with an additional 25% penalty on purchases of Russian oil and arms.

That makes India — one of the US’s strongest partners in the Indo-Pacific — among the countries paying the highest tariffs in the world. That could deal a blow to exports and growth in the world’s fifth-largest economy, given that the US was, until recently, India’s largest trading partner.

The tariff reduction has put the Indian government on alert.

Modi urged small shop owners and businesses to put up signs saying "Made in India" or "Made in India" outside their shops.

"We must become self-sufficient - not out of desperation, but out of pride," he said. "Economic selfishness is on the rise globally and we must not sit and cry about our difficulties, we must rise above them and not allow others to hold us in their clutches."

For many watching, this is clearly aimed at opposing Donald Trump's brutal 50% tariff on India, which will disrupt the livelihoods of millions of people across the country's export-oriented industries, which supply everything from clothes to diamonds and shrimp to American consumers.

Amid this blow, Modi's message to his countrymen has been clear and strong - both to make money in India and to spend in India./ CNA
