At least six dead in fire in Yerevan

Firefighters are still battling flames at a major market in Yerevan, a day after an explosion caused a fire, killing at least six people and injuring dozens.

Rescue operations continued on August 15, said Gary Armaghanyan, an official from the Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

He said that so far, 16 people are considered missing.

"Currently, firefighters and rescue teams are continuing operations. The fire is still not under control and search and rescue operations are continuing," he told RFE/RL's Armenian Service.

An unknown number of people are trapped under the rubble after the explosion that caused a fire in the Surmalu market in Yerevan. The explosion occurred in the area where fireworks are stored.

The market where the explosion happened is located about two kilometers south of the city center.

Videos posted on social networks showed plumes of smoke rising from the Surmalu market, where, among other things, fireworks and other pyrotechnics are sold./REL
