US and UK launch attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen

The US and UK have launched joint strikes on 36 Houthi targets in 13 locations in Yemen.

The military move comes after the US launched strikes on 85 targets in Syria and Iraq on Friday in response to a deadly drone attack on a US military base.

Yemen's Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, began targeting merchant ships in the Red Sea in November, disrupting global supply chains, the BBC reports . 

The Houthis say they are targeting Israeli-bound ships in solidarity with the Palestinians; however, many of the ships attacked have had no connection to Israel. 

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said the latest attacks were "not an escalation", and the Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea were "illegal and unacceptable"./CNA
