Three scientists win Nobel Prize in Chemistry for work on metal-organic

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M Yaghi for their work on metal-organic frameworks.

The work of the three scientists could be used to combat some of the planet's biggest problems, including controlling carbon dioxide, which could help combat climate change, or even reducing plastic pollution, using chemical elements.

The three winners will share a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (about 1 million euros).

The work of the three scientists is based on how molecules can be built into structures. The Nobel committee has called their work molecular architecture.

Scientists have been working to build structures with large spaces between molecules, through which gases and other chemicals can circulate. They are called metal-organic frameworks.

The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at a press conference in Stockholm.

Professor Kitagawa works at Kyoto University in Japan, Professor Richard Robson at the University of Melbourne in Australia, and Professor Omar M. Yaghi at the University of California in the United States./ REL
