CNN founder Ted Turner dies at 87

Ted Turner, the founder of the well-known American media network CNN, passed away this Wednesday at the age of 87.

Turner revealed in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with dementia, a progressive brain disorder.

Born Robert Edward Turner III on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and studied economics at Brown University, but was expelled for having a girl in his dorm room.

Turner began buying radio stations in the United States, and in 1969 he bought the Atlanta television station 'WJRJ', which broadcast classic films and syndicated cartoons, sitcoms, and dramas. In 1976, WTGC began using a satellite to broadcast its content to local cable networks, further increasing its viewership. Shortly thereafter, he bought the Atlanta Braves and, by broadcasting their games on WTGC, turned his media outlet into a household name.

In 1980, Turner founded Cable News Network (CNN), the first 24-hour news channel, transforming the media industry by broadcasting specific, important events from around the world in real time./CNA
