Vehicle rams into crowd of people in Germany/ Perpetrator sent to psychiatric

A judge in Germany has ordered the driver accused of plowing his car into a crowd of people in Leipzig to be sent to a psychiatric hospital. The judge said there were compelling reasons to believe the suspect, a 33-year-old German, had mental health problems.

The judge also said that it was possible that the defendant, due to his condition, would commit further serious acts, prompting the hospitalisation order for the sake of public safety. 

Authorities said the incident was a deliberate car crash and that the suspect "wanted to kill and seriously injure as many people as possible."

They also stated that they do not believe he had any religious or political motive. Today it was revealed that the suspect had been receiving mental health treatment a few weeks before Monday's incident.

Prosecutors said he was admitted to a specialized psychiatric hospital from April 17 to 29 "due to his mental state and with his consent." The suspect is being investigated for double murder and multiple charges of attempted murder. /CNA
