Macron: I will talk to Pezeshkian about reopening the Strait of Hormuz

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that he will talk to his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, about reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters while in Armenia's capital Yerevan, Macron stressed the need to restore freedom of navigation in the strait, through which about 20% of the world's oil supplies pass under normal circumstances.

"France has maintained an unchanged position from the beginning. We call for the cessation of all hostilities, a return to diplomatic negotiations and respect for all countries in the region. The only possible option is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the absence of any taxes or coercive measures. Any unilateral escalation against tankers, container ships or third countries is a mistake that incites war and leads to escalation," Macron said.

France and the United Kingdom have led efforts in Europe to create an international maritime coalition to ensure safe shipping in the Strait of Hormuz once major hostilities cease. /CNA
