Spain seizes record 40 tons of cocaine in Atlantic Ocean/ 20 people in custody

A record amount of cocaine, amounting to 40 tons, has been seized by Spanish authorities in the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish Civil Guard seized the ship in international waters near Spain's Canary Islands, while around 20 people were arrested as part of the operation.

The ship, which is now being inspected in the Canary Islands, had set sail from Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, for Benghazi, Libya.

Referring to previous such operations, the goal was to unload the drugs onto smaller ships for distribution in Europe, because unloading this volume of cocaine in Libya, according to local authorities, does not make much sense.

"Many ships, different ports would be needed, because such an unloading in a single port would raise a lot of suspicion. So, the operation was probably coordinated through international networks ," the authorities said.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told reporters in Madrid that the seizure was one of the largest, not only nationally but also internationally, without giving further details.

Spain's close ties with Latin America and proximity to Morocco, a major cannabis producer, make it a key entry point for the drug into Europe.
