British maritime authorities warn of 'critical' threat level in Strait

Ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz face "critical" security threats, the UK's Merchant Marine Operations Centre has warned, due to "ongoing regional military operations".

In an update, issued after Donald Trump's tweet, UKMTO says ships should be aware of "the proximity and risks of any mines or threats reported along intended transit routes".

"Transit through or in the vicinity of the Traffic Separation Scheme should be considered extremely dangerous due to the presence of mines that have not been fully surveyed and mitigated."

The Traffic Division Scheme is an international agreement that has defined maritime shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz since 1968.
