Ukrainian drone hits luxury building in Moscow

A Ukrainian drone struck a luxury residential building in Moscow in the early hours of Monday, resulting in no casualties but causing visible damage to the building's facade.

It was the third night in a row that the Russian capital has been attacked by drones, days before Russia holds a scaled-down parade on May 9 to mark the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

An unverified video circulating on social media shows firefighters entering a badly damaged apartment covered in dust and rubble and with broken windows, while another shows drone debris scattered across the street below.

Two more drones were intercepted, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports suspended operations overnight.

A total of 117 were captured in several Russian regions between Sunday and Monday, the Russian defense ministry said. Sixty of them were targeted in the St. Petersburg region in what regional governor Aleksandr Drozhenko called a "massive" attack.

The residential building that was hit is located in an upscale neighborhood in southwest Moscow, less than 10 km from the Kremlin and Red Square, where Saturday's parade will be held.

Ukrainian drones have attacked Moscow several times since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Drone alerts regularly close airports on the outskirts of the capital and disrupt air traffic, but most of the capital is protected by the Pantsir-S surface-to-air missile system and successful attacks so close to the center are relatively rare.
